Woke–Islamic Alliance? Immigration, Suicidal Empathy & Future of Western Culture | Gad Saad

Mass migration has become one of the most consequential debates of our time.

Beneath policy disputes over borders and asylum, the deeper argument is cultural: can Western liberal democracies absorb large inflows of people who bring not only different languages and customs but also distinct religious and political commitments?

Why Compatibility Matters

Most people accept that immigration can strengthen a country. The debate begins with the question of whether all cultural and religious traditions are equally compatible with the institutions and moral foundations of the West. Western values have been shaped over centuries by a mix of Christian ethics, Greco-Roman political thought, classical liberalism, and institutions that protect individual liberty, private property, representative government, and free markets.

Some faiths and cultures easily fit within that framework. Others raise legitimate questions about integration because they include political prescriptions for society or contain doctrinal elements that encourage conversion, assert supremacy, or impose constraints on the freedoms of non-adherents.

Proselytizing vs. Political Faiths: A Simple Framework

One useful way to sort faiths is along two axes: proselytizing and political content.

  • Non-proselytizing political faiths—Teach a social order but discourage conversion. An example is certain historic forms of Judaism, which have traditionally limited formal conversion and mixed religious and civil law in specific contexts.
  • Proselytizing non-political faiths—Encourage conversion but do not prescribe a political system. Many forms of Christianity fit here, where evangelism is present but political governance is not centrally dictated by doctrine.
  • Proselytizing political faiths—Combine missionary impulse with a political program. This mix creates friction when adherents arrive in societies organized by different foundational principles.

This classification is not perfect, but it highlights why some incoming communities assimilate with relative ease while others create sustained pressure on civic norms and institutions.

What Makes Islam Different, According to the Argument

There are several interlocking features often cited to explain why large-scale Islamic immigration raises distinct challenges for Western liberal orders. Summarized, the main points are

  1. Religious and political overlap—Islam, in many interpretations, combines religious law and political organization. Religious prescriptions often include governance and public law, not just private belief.
  2. Low barrier to conversion—The public ritual of conversion in Islam is simple and immediate, which increases growth potential compared with faiths that require lengthy integration for converts.
  3. Proselytizing as a duty—In many readings, spreading the faith is a religious obligation, which contrasts with traditions that discourage or severely regulate proselytizing.
  4. Supremacist or universal ambitions—Some doctrinal claims, historically and textually, frame an ultimate goal of a universal community under a single religious order. As one close summary puts it:

“Islam is technically a religion of peace in the following sense. We will achieve peace once the entire globe and every millimeter of it is under the unifying flag of Allah.”

Whether one accepts this interpretation as definitive of all Muslims or not, the point is that content matters: ideology shapes behavior, institutions, and long-term social outcomes.

Demography, Hijra & the Threefold Strategy

The argument from strategy describes three mechanisms by which religious communities increase influence in plural societies:

  • Demography—Higher birth rates change local and national demographic balances over time.
  • Migration (hijra)—Strategic migration changes population composition in target societies.
  • Use of liberal freedoms—leveraging freedoms of speech, association, and assembly to reshape norms and policies.

When combined, these mechanisms can rapidly shift the character of a neighborhood, a city, or even a nation. Examples from modern history and current developments in European cities are often used to illustrate how incremental accommodation requests can accelerate into visible public claims and institutional changes once a critical mass is reached.

The Parasitic Mind & Suicidal Empathy

Two contemporary concepts help explain why some Western groups now align politically and emotionally with movements that appear ill-suited to liberal pluralism.

:: Parasitic Mind

The parasitic mind framework treats dangerous ideas as biological parasites: certain concepts can hijack cognitive mechanisms and rewire priorities in ways that favor their spread. Once a network of beliefs takes hold, behavior follows—sometimes in ways that run counter to the individual’s or group’s long-term interests.

:: Suicidal Empathy

Suicidal empathy describes the moral phenomenon where the desire to be seen as compassionate or progressive becomes so paramount that it trumps prudence and self-preservation. It explains why some activists build alliances with actors whose values are fundamentally opposed to the activists’ own identity or safety.

To make the idea concrete: groups that prioritize maximal empathy may openly support causes or movements that are hostile to core aspects of their identity, because signaling empathy becomes the highest moral achievement.

“The highest goal is to demonstrate your progressive credentials by saying I’m willing to give up my life to demonstrate how empathetic I am, how tolerant I am, how non-judgmental I am.”

Why the Left Supported Mass Migration: Political Opportunism & Moral Fervor

Support for open borders and expansive immigration policy among progressive elites is driven by two overlapping motives.

  • Political calculation—New populations may eventually align with parties that expand welfare and vote reliably. Some actors view migration through an electoral lens.
  • Moral and psychological drivers—For many, welcoming migrants is an expression of moral identity. When combined with the parasitic mind and suicidal empathy, this moral posture can lead to policies that overlook long-term cultural consequences.

Both motives can coexist. Political actors may exploit genuine moral commitments for electoral gain, while genuinely empathetic people may ignore inconvenient facts or costs in pursuit of moral purity.

Have We Reached a Tipping Point in the West?

Whether a tipping point has been reached depends on context, country, and local demographics. Some European cities are experiencing rapid cultural transformation and public tension. Other places remain mixed or stable.

Two crucial observations follow:

  1. Autocorrective mechanisms exist—legal, policy, and civic measures can be implemented to restore a balance between integration and cultural preservation. These include stricter immigration controls, enforcement of shared civic norms, and integration requirements that emphasize language, civic education, and allegiance to core constitutional principles.
  2. Political will is the limiting factor—the theoretical existence of remedies is not enough. Absent leaders willing to act, change will either not happen or will happen too late and in a disorderly way.

Practical Prescriptions

If the goal is to preserve liberal democratic institutions while remaining humane, several pragmatic steps are available:

  • Prioritize integration—Immigration policy should favor candidates who demonstrate commitment to constitutional values, civic norms, and language acquisition.
  • Enforce the rule of law—Cultural accommodation has limits when it conflicts with basic rights and liberties of others. Laws should be applied uniformly.
  • Promote civic education—Teach the philosophical and historical foundations of liberal democracy so newcomers understand the expectations of participation.
  • Resist moral grandstanding—compassion should not become a virtue-signaling exercise that ignores consequences. Empathy must be balanced with prudence.
  • Use selective admission criteria—where states reserve the right to select immigrants, they should choose newcomers who are most likely to assimilate into and contribute to civic culture.

A Straightforward Standard

The core test is simple and politically defensible: if a person or group embraces the civic values that enable individual liberty and equality under law, they are welcome. If they reject those values and seek to replace civic norms with a different legal-cultural order, they are not.

“If you adhere to that, come in, my brother, and let’s welcome you so that we can build an even better society together. If not, you could off back to where you came from, and we don’t want you here.”

Conclusion

The immigration debate is not only about economics or security. It is fundamentally about which ideas and institutions will structure the next generation of Western societies. Content matters. Ideas propagate through people, and those ideas shape law, culture, and daily life.

Addressing the challenges of large-scale migration requires honesty about compatibility, courage to set and enforce civic standards, and humility to learn from societies that already wrestle with these questions. Without political will and a clear moral framework that prioritizes individual liberty and truth, adjustment will either not occur or occur in ways that erode the very freedoms liberal democracies aim to protect.
